Rhine in Flames at the Loreley: fireworks, boats and how to see them

  • 2 min read

Rhine in Flames, or Rhein in Flammen, is a series of summer fireworks festivals along the Rhine. On each night, a convoy of illuminated passenger boats sails along the river while castles and riverbanks are lit with red flares and fireworks burst over the water. The night at St. Goar and Sankt Goarshausen, below the Loreley, is one of the most dramatic.

When is it?

Rhine in Flames takes place in several towns on different Saturdays between May and September. The St. Goar and Sankt Goarshausen night is usually held in mid-September, often called the Night of the Loreley. Other nights take place at Bonn, between Spay and Koblenz, at Bingen and Rüdesheim, and at Oberwesel. Check the official dates each year before you plan your trip.

Watching from a boat

The most memorable way to see it is from one of the boats in the convoy. The ships gather in the evening, sail past the towns as the flares are lit and stop in the river for the main fireworks. Tickets usually include dinner or snacks, and they sell out months ahead.

Watching from the shore

  • The riverbanks: the promenades in Sankt Goarshausen and St. Goar fill up early, with food and wine stalls.
  • The hills: viewpoints above the towns give a wider view of the boats and the fireworks, but take care on paths in the dark.
  • Arrive early: roads close and car parks fill in the afternoon. Come by train and allow time for crowds afterwards.

Planning your stay

  • Book a room many months ahead. Rooms in Sankt Goarshausen and St. Goar go first; also look at Oberwesel, Boppard and Koblenz. See where to stay.
  • Extra trains usually run, but they are very crowded after the fireworks.
  • Bring a warm layer, as September evenings by the river can be cool.
  • Make a weekend of it with a daytime cruise and a wine tasting; it is also harvest time.
